Mac OS X server debuts with open source

I'm sure you've all heard the great news. Once again, Apple has proceeded down the road of innovation in style. What does this mean for future MacMate owners ? Among other things, probably faster and better implication of MacMate to OS X servers, if this need ever arises. A possible scenario of this would be at a hospital, where health care providers equipped with MacMates, could easily access OS X servers linked up to various databases, MedLine, etc, all through wireless communications...

All quiet on the front..

Once again, the amount of MacMate juice has slowed to a trickle. Apologies for the lack of new info, as sources are strained. In the meantime, spring is defintely here, so sit back on the porch and enjoy a glass of chardonnay...

Wired Hype List confirmation

A browse through this months Wired magazine's hype list has a blurb on Apple, and mentions the coming of a handheld device, the iPad.

It seems that there have a few inquiries about the offical name of handwriting technology for the Newton. Some people claim it is known as "Rosetta", others as "Mondello". The following link, is to an article for Pen Computing, which refers to the technology as "Mondello". Semi, if not full-bodied, evidence...more to come.

-The last Newton Notes

The links section has also been updated to include an editorial piece for MacWeek, which speculates on the whole MacMate/WebMate issue. It was written in Dec '98. Just more fuel for the fire, I suppose.

Piece of Mind: Batteries... It's obvious that there needs to be some sort of breakthrough in battery technology. But, in the meantime, we're going to have to settle with NiMH and Lithium Ions for a little while longer. For those of you who use the Newton 2100/2000, I'm sure you'll agree that 4 AA's is quite a hefty load. With use of low power consumption technology, the MacMate should use ideally only use 2 AA's. Not being electrical engineers, the MOTD group is not totally sure if this is enough for Wireless internet or eNet card support, but if the Palm VII can do it on 2 triple A's, then why not the MacMate?

Something else to consider is hand-crank technology. As recently reported by many news sites, Apple indeed is in negotiations with the BayGen Power Group, although these talks seem to be directed toward the P1, not the MacMate. Still, such a device for the MacMate is totally possible. Ladies and gentlemen, can you say "eternal life" ? Yes, the best is yet to come, and in an environmentally friendly way.

According to O'Grady's Powerpage, the MacMate (or iPad), can follow two paths, the first being the Palm OS path, in which the device would run some sort of modified version of the Palm OS. Form factor is as of yet unknown, although the MOTD team feels that something resembling the late Messagepad 2100 would be suitable. The second path would lead to a PDA, running Mac OS Lite, perhaps fused with Newton technologies (ie. the "Mondello" handwriting recognition). Optional features would include wireless internet activity.

A Powerpage reader has suggested that which current Palm OS emulation technology, the Macmate could run both the Palm and Mac OS, leading to the best of both worlds.

If MOTD team was asked for product suggestion, may we suggest...

-Similar form factor to MP2100, slightly smaller, with new translucent plastics

-16 MB built in RAM, New World Lite ROM, and a Compact Flash RAM slot for future expansion

-1 PC Card slot, for ethernet or modem use, and 1 USB port (opening the door to third party luggable keyboards, among other things..:)

-Optional slot for wireless internet access, and standard IrDA port.

Back to home.
