Welcome all to this site. About a year ago, a certain PDA known as the Newton was discontinued. For better or for worse, it was done. The saga picks up now, as recently, several sources have reported that a new Apple PDA is under development. In the spirit of such sites as O'Grady's Powerpage and MacOSrumors, this page will be devoted to informing users of this upcoming device.

No Later than MW SF , Jan'00...!!! says MOSR

As reported on MacOS Rumors

Personal Digital Assistant: It's been widely known now for some time that Apple and Palm Computing are working together to merge Palm OS and Newton OS technologies to make a palmtop/PDA that is more "computer-like" than the current generation of Palms, which are designed to be as simple as possible, forgoing many of the elements which make most computer operating systems "open" to heavy customization/optimization. Details are few and far between, but the fruits of these labors will be shipping to the public "no later than Macworld San Francisco" in January 2000, according to a reliable Apple source.

Not Dead Just Yet..:)

Well, I just received a link from MOTD reader Marco Habschick, to a Pda-Dispatch discussion by the last ex-Newton Employee..very,very,interesting stuff.. Thanks Marco! It seems that the Newton really is a work of art...(read the article, you'll get it)

MOTD moves to Greener Pastures

Well, like I mentioned earlier, I was working on something which would benefit all, and have offically joined up with O'Grady's Powerpage for coverage on the MacMate. Feel free to check it out. As such, this page will still be up, but I would need help to maintain it...thanks for the supporting MOTD these past weeks, readers.!

Ioptics OROM drive holds promise..no fooling

I remember reading about this drive last year in PopSci, and thought it was a cool concept. However, the product wasn't shipping until 1999. (I still haven't heard much about it). Anyhow, it's dubbed the OROM (optical read only memory), should run you about $200 US, and $2-3 per 128 MB disk ! It's about 10x faster than a CD-ROM, and requires no moving parts (which equates to long battery life, and ruggedness). But, as the name suggests, it is not rewriteable. Still, when you look at the popularity of CD writers, I think this device will have many uses...

Lack of updates

I apologize for the lack of updates, as I have exams coming up, among other things. But, I am working on a MacMate site with someone you all are probably familiar with. I'll let you all know when its official. In the meantime, updates will be sporadic. My apologies

Palm VII site up ?!!!!

Wow, talk about jumping the gun. It sounds good, and from a recent report, it appears the Palm VII will be considerably less than the estimated $800 US !

New Star Wars games for Mac !! (sort of)

Word on the Lucasarts ranch is that there are 2 new games based on Episode 1: The Phantom Menance. The first, availble for PC and Playstation users, and therefore, for Mac users via VGS (granted if it works on it), is a story based adventure title. The other mentioned game is a podracing game, and is being produced for the PC, MAC, N64 and PSX platforms. Good stuff..

A Three Portable World, says Jobs

Well, it seems that Apple views the world as ripe for 3 (yes 3) portable machines. According to Steve Jobs, the first market would be for "digital road warriors", those who want full fledged desktop replacements, in short, the works (the current PB series). The second would be a low cost alternative (the P1, or WebMate). In addition, a third type of portable was hinted at, one geared towards busy execs for checking email (the elusive MacMate perhaps?). However, when asked about plans for a future Newton-like device, Jobs replied "We've elected, for now, not to get into that business". Apple is licensing some Palm technology though.

So what does this mean? Well, Apple has been secretive in the past of new devices, so don't throw off all hopes for the MacMate just yet. It may not be as exactly as we envision (ala Bride of Newton), but the ambiguity in leaving a third option open seems to hint that something is in the works.

A Hint of the Future ?

Apple board member Larry Ellison, was quoted as heralding Apple as "the great provider of digital appliances". He also mentioned that we will "see more affordable machines for students", and that [Apple] will "continue to work on price, work on portability, [and] work on great new display technology".

"I've seen some of the new products coming downstream and you want them like a teenage boy wants a cool-looking fast car," says Ellison.

Well, I don't know about you, but hints at portability (the MacMate?), display technology (reflective colour LCD -ala gameboy), and affordable machines for students sounds like Apple has got some good stuff in the over...

I'm looking for a logo for MOTD, so all you artists out there, feel free to contribute your designs. You'll have my eternal gratitude...

Apple Shareholder meeting tommorrow..

Well, it's that time again. Don't expect anything on the MacMate though. A conservative pitch for the unit would probably be in MacWorld NY, although something could pop up at WWDC. The new PB's and iMac's are probably in store for WWDC.

March 20. updated @ 3:40 PM EST. Less than 2 months until Episode One !!

Calling Apple: Attach a Stand!

To save hassles with setting up the unit in landscape mode (assuming there is one, although it would a shame if there isin't), why not have some sort of simple prop up wire/plastic stand on the back of the MacMate ? That way, us folks in planes, trains, and all night diners can easily set up the unit and type away, or give presentations...just my 0.2

Cordless phone for iMac.

Being an iMac user, I spotted this interesting 900 Mhz cordless phone by a company in Singapore, the McPiper. It's similar to the Microsoft Cordless Phone..but in bondi.
